Monday 20 April 2020

Happy Monday! The sun is shining!

I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend, it's always nice to have a change of pace, even if we are at home all of the time...
I shared an article with the students today and I asked them to share it with their families tonight and then we are going to talk about it tomorrow. It helped me see some positive in all of this, those that read it today felt the same. Here is the article:

Hi everyone, my mom (Mrs. May) sent me this message this morning and I thought it would be nice to share with you and your family (I will send this to your parents as well, but please share it with them). It made me think… a lot! We are all trying to figure this online learning out, while still trying to live a “normal” at home life and be the kid or adult that we want to be. During the day I am struggling to be the best teacher, best mom, best wife and best daughter that I can all day every day, and I am exhausted! You are all trying to be the best kid or parent that you can be while trying to keep everything under control and roll with all of the changes that are happening extremely quickly. I challenge you to read this SLOWLY, CAREFULLY and think about it! What do you think? How does it make you feel? Can you relate in any way? Do you think it’s possible? Talk about it with your parents and siblings, what do they think?
Let’s talk about it Tuesday afternoon (1:00).

"If they cancel the rest of the school year, students would miss approx 6 months of education. Many people are concerned about students falling behind because of this. Yes, they may fall behind when it comes to classroom education...
BUT WHAT IF ....
What if instead of falling “behind", this group of kids are ADVANCED because of this? Hear me out.
What if they have more empathy, they enjoy family connection, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read, they love to express themselves in writing.
What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own backyard and sitting near a window in the quiet.
What if they notice the birds and the dates the different flowers emerge, and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower?
What if this generation are the ones to learn to cook, organize their space, do their laundry, and keep a well run home?
What if they learn to stretch a dollar and to live with less?
What if they learn to plan shopping trips and meals at home.
What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good to share in the small delights of the everyday?
What if they are the ones to place great value on our teachers and educational professionals, librarians, public servants and the previously invisible essential support workers like truck drivers, grocers, cashiers, custodians, logistics, and health care workers and their supporting staff, just to name a few of the millions taking care of us right now while we are sheltered in place?
What if among these children, a great leader emerges who had the benefit of a slower pace and a simpler life to truly learn what really matters in this life?
What if they are AHEAD? 🙏🏼🏡♥️🏫"

Week #2- Check!

Thank you everyone for another successful week! Yesterday and today felt way better than last week, thanks to those of you that spoke up about being stressed and overwhelmed with everything that has been happening!
Next week we will be adding in a Science assignment, from the conversation today on the google classroom, most students feel like it would be fun to do a partner assignment. I am going to leave this up to the students, the assignment will have the instructions on it, they will have the opportunity to pick a partner or group of 3 or work independently. I'm not sure of everyone's availability so I don't want to assign groups. This is not to cause STRESS! Hopefully, it'll be less stressful!

I hope everyone takes a break this weekend and gets some fresh air!

Due Monday:

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a great long Easter and Passover weekend! I was online a couple of times over the weekend and noticed some other students on and doing assignments, asking questions and posting homework. This is great! However, remember to take a break! You need to go outside, be active and have some family time as well!

Please remember to submit all of your assignments with the same effort that you would use in class. I am working on doing feedback for everyone, but where there is little effort, it's hard. I understand that this is not how you would like to learn, but we have to make the best of what we have!

There are still some students that have not handed in any assignments from week 1, please try to stay on top of the due dates!

Sunday 5 April 2020

Happy Sunday Everyone!

I hope you are excited about tomorrow!! I am hoping that everything will work out, fingers crossed!

I will be online from 8-9am, if you are awake, please log in to the google homeroom classroom and we can have a check in and say hello to everyone! Remember that this time will be used as my office hours, so tomorrow this will be very basic. However, please make sure that you are logged on from 1-2pm, where we review the expectations, assignments and day to day learning. Tomorrow will focus more on reconnecting, saying hi and learning how we are going to continue with online learning.

Moving forward, you are not expected to be logged on from 8-9am unless you have questions, want to share something or are looking for feedback. Our learning and lessons will take place from 1-2pm.

Since we can not use any type of media that has a camera, we are very limited with the communication tools that we are allowed to use. Hopefully this will change as we continue, but for now most of our communication will be you watching videos of my lessons and then working independently on the tasks. I am hoping to post different videos so that you have access to all of the lessons just in case you are not able to be online from 1-2 every day.

Please keep in mind that we are learning as we go and things will probably change as we figure out what works and what does not. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss any tasks, difficulties that you are experiencing or have other questions. I will be checking my emails throughout the day and will respond as soon as possible.

Thanks again for your support during this journey, I am looking forward to reconnecting with everyone tomorrow!

Stay safe, be healthy,
Jen Lummiss

Thursday 2 April 2020

More information...

Hi everyone, I hope that you are continuing to stay healthy and active while at home. I have recieved a few emails about the times that I have suggested for our class and learning to begin on Monday. I understand that 8:00am is an hour before school, I am also trying to figure out what will work best for me and allow me to give you my undivided attention. With my 2 little kids at home, I'm sure you can agree that getting time on the computer will be challenging! What I can offer is to switch the learning time and the office hour. Therefore, Monday morning I will be online from 8-9am and willing to talk to anyone that is awake and logged in. Then every day from 1-2pm, I will teach the lessons. As always I will also be online after 7:00pm editing your work and providing feedback. I hope that this will support everyone's learning and excitement to return to learning on Monday. I am sorry for causing any stress that may have occured with the suggested schedule. This will be a learning curve for everyone, including me and I hope that you are up for new experiences, challenges and fun times as we continue on this journey together.
Stay well, talk soon,
Jen Lummiss

Wednesday 1 April 2020

Hey everyone!

Hi everyone, it was really nice talking to you or your parents this week and I am really excited to begin some type of communication on Monday.

It is still very unclear about our expectations come Monday. There are 2 documents circulating right now and they are very different, we are trying to figure out which one we are to follow.

What I know as of right now...

My plan at this point is to be online teaching a lesson and communicating with all of you every morning (Monday-Friday) from 8:00-9:00. This is when most of our math lessons will take place. Then I will have an office hour from 1:00-2:00 every afternoon (Monday-Friday) to conference, support and provide feedback with anyone that needs it.

What will we be learning:

  • Math- continue with fractions
  • Literacy- independent novel study, exposition essay
  • Science- Begin flight unit, we will come back to electricity later
  • Social Studies- one big project about Canada and connections around the world
This coming morning, April 6th, please log onto your google account, go into the homeroom classroom and follow the instructions on how to access google meet.
The code for the Homeroom classroom is: ufes5il
The code for the Math classroom is: lg7qw4f  (the first letter is an "L")
I'm going to attach the Math textbook to the Math classroom tonight.

Stay active and healthy,
I'll be in touch soon!
